Chapter Six

Momma Peach found the door to Aunt Rachel's room locked up tighter than a tick on a fat hound dog. “Mae, honey? You here?” she called out and glanced up and down the hallway. Mae popped out at the end of the hallway with a worried face.

Mae looked back over the receptionist counter, spotted Deborah's locked office door, and then eased her eyes toward Momma Peach again. Deborah, who had always been a very well-mannered, professional, and kind woman, had suddenly turned bitter, cruel and downright secretive toward Mae. “Oh, what to do?” she prayed in a whisper.

Wilma saw Mae debating on what choice to make. “She's scared,” she whispered. “Deborah has threatened her.”

“Truer words were never spoken.” Momma Peach patted Wilma's hand and walked down the hallway toward Mae. “Honey, just slip the key into my hand and walk away,” she said in a soothing, calm voice. “Don’t worry yourself about all this. Me and Wilma will take care of it.”

Mae made a pained face. Usually she would have been wearing a festive holiday dress, but on that cold, snowy morning she was wearing a frumpy tan dress and heavy brown boots to keep the snow off her feet. Her hair was tied into a ponytail. No make-up was worn. Mae looked like a woman deeply troubled. “I wish I had never opened my mouth,” she whimpered.

“You told Wilma and me that you saw Deborah leave my Aunt Rachel's room last night. We're very grateful.”

“Deborah cut the security feed,” Mae whispered in a careful voice. “I watch the cameras from my home. I'm not really supposed to, but I love all the residents staying here and I…feel personally responsible for them. I know that sounds…a little over-protective, and I know I was breaking the law…” Mae lowered her head. “My grandmother was placed in a horrible nursing home and died…without peace. I was sixteen years old when she died…I swore…oh, I swore I would never let anyone die the way she did ever again.”

Momma Peach put a loving hand down on Mae's shoulder. “And good thing you did, too. You just keep on watching the security feed on your home computer, you hear?”

“You mean…you're not going to arrest me?” Mae asked anxiously. She looked at Wilma who had stepped up beside Momma Peach. “Detective South?”

“Mae,” Wilma said, “You didn't tell me anything,” she smiled with a conspiratorial look up and down the empty hallway. “I didn't see anything or hear anything.”

Mae couldn't believe her ears. “I…” she said and then forced her mind to think. It was time to show her appreciation. “When I saw the security feed go off last night I drove straight here. The snow was awful, but since I live in town, the plow had left me a good path to drive. Anyway, when I arrived, the front desk was vacant, which was strange. It was Melinda's night to watch the desk.”

“Where was this Melinda woman?”

“I found her in the dining room mopping the floor,” Mae said in a strange voice.
